The Best Gift

Rushing and buying
Making lists and more lists
Seeking presents for loved ones
Wondering, "Do they already have this?"

Weaving and dodging,
Store in and store out
It's hard to decide
With so many about

Will this go with that?
Does this even make sense?
I hope so after all the effort
I've put in to this!

Finally, I'm finished!
Every item is bought!
Why then, don't I feel
Content with this lot?

Because I know things are just that
The most meaningful gifts
Are treasures bestowed without
All the "What if's"

The gift of yourself,
Your time and your love,
Patience with others,
Simple graces from above.

No one questions those gifts,
There aren't returns or complaints,
Always happily accepted,
Only one thing remains...

Next year, this I'll remember
Before all of the shopping...
I'll save myself a few trips,
And a whole lot of walking!

Do you ever feel like something's missing after all the presents are bought?
Remember, the best gift of all was given to us long, long ago...

For God so loved the world that
He gave His one and only Son
that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish but have eternal life.

~ John 3:16 NIV ~

Merry Christmas to you & yours!!

  1. Oh Meghan, that is so true....the best gifts don't have" what if attached" to it. Every year I try to be unaffected by the commercialism of the season, but it's hard not to be!!
I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

  3. Oh Megan, you beautiful and multi-gifted person. Knowing you this year has been such a gift. I am honored that you would mention my name at all and I am glad to read this as a reminder before seems I must still shop today:) I will attempt couple that with love's true gifts and not stress about the thing, remembering it is the thought that counts...only words unless put into practice!. You raise so many true and valid points..'do they already have this?' 'will this go with this'?
Oh, I enjoyed this immensely. I have a tear in my eye.
God bless you and yours this Christmas Season.

I know my 'break' which I announced got post-poned a little:) It will happen ,most likely unannounced.

  6. Lucy ~ I know, it's hard to avoid commercialism, especially when it literally surrounds us! I try to make handmade gifts & cards... it's not all bad, I feel good giving the kids some new things, but also try and show them giving is better than receiving :)

  7. Diana ~ my daughter got our nativity set out of the Christmas bulbs and lights, and sat over from the rest of us, just looking all the figures over. I went to her and we talked about Jesus' birth... Thank you for sharing your beautiful Christmas Eve tradition! Cole is a lucky little guy to have you for his mom :)

  8. Janet ~ I actually was relieved to see you liked my poem! I NEVER would've felt confident enough to post this without first reading all of your beautiful poetry, so thank you! It took me several hours to come up with just this one, so it's not so natural a gift as what you have... I have a deeper appreciation for your poetry :) I saw your announcement... I'm sure a break will come when the timing's right :)

I admit I will be going out again in search of more gifts, but will also try to remember the greatest gifts are not 'things' :)

  13. Lucy ~ it's alright, 'Megan' is a name with so many variations, it's bound to be spelled differently :) I didn't mind, truly :)

Kat ~ I'm glad you enjoyed reading about 'the best gift' and the meaning of the season :) Merry Christmas to you!
